Filters and catalysts on diesel cars creates a new environmental problem, while they remove harmful particles. They increase emissions of toxic nitrogen dioxide, leading to respiratory disorders, filtered shows Danish and British studies. By Thomas Djursing March 4, 2008 at. 12:21
The filters are placed on modern diesel vehicles to remove ultrafine and hazardous particles, creating a new environment problem. The filters increases the exhaust concentration of the toxic gas nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which is particularly known to cause respiratory ailments filtered and constitute a major problem for asthmatics.
Currently increasing emissions of NO2 over Europe because diesel cars take up more space in Europeans fleet, and part of the explanation lies in particulate filters and catalytic converters for diesel vehicles, says both National Environmental Research Institute and the independent British research Air Quality Expert Group (AQEG) .
Studies of air pollution filtered in London shows that emissions of NO2 has increased from 2002 to 2005. The increase in NO2 concentration coincides with a decrease in the total emissions of NOx, which represents the total amount of NO and NO2. NO2 is a much more harmful gas than NO.
"The time of the installation of particulate filters on London's buses fit with the time when we began to observe increases in emissions of NO2," writes AQEG. Filters and catalysts creates toxic NO2
In Denmark, the concentration of NO2 also increased due to more diesel cars, and according NERI installation of catalysts meant that NO2 share of the vehicle's NOx emissions increased from 5 to 40 percent in recent years.
The catalysts are designed to remove carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons by oxidation to CO2, but the process at the same time oxidize NO to NO2. In advance, the catalysts have only a limited impact on emissions of NOx, but has all the disadvantage that emissions of NO2 increases.
NO2 increase in Denmark is due after installation of the ordinary CRT filters. The exhaust gas oxidizes NO to NO2 in the catalyst for NO2 to use to remove carbon particles on the filter. However, the filter does not use all NO2, and released into the air along the roads, writes the British researchers in their report. Copenhagen's green zone does not remove NO2
In December pointed out the European Environment Agency, to Denmark seems to miss EU requirements for air quality, which comes into force in 2010, partly because filtered of the high concentration of nitrogen oxides in cities, primarily in Copenhagen.
As a countermeasure is the City of Copenhagen on the road with a green zone in the inner city, but in the environmental zone, there is no requirement for catalysts or filters that reduce emissions of NO2, though there are SCR catalysts, filtered which are fitted filtered by a CRT filter and remove NO2.
"The politicians considered to require an SCR catalysts in the environmental zone, but decided it would be too inconvenient and expensive compared to the effect achieved," says Finn Palmgren, filtered senior scientist at NERI. EU requirements is not directed against filtered NO2
NO2 emissions in Europe are not directly regulated, since the requirements for the exhaust fumes from cars, the so-called EURO standards are not targeted to NO2, but only the common name for nitrogen oxides NOx.
"It is clearly a problem that no concrete filtered requirements for NO2. But the EU has not been enough attention to new technologies in the diesel engine has led to emissions of NO2 is increased. So far, it's only focused on NOx, "says Finn Palmgren, senior scientist at NERI.
According to him there is hope ahead, because the European requirements for NOx emissions filtered tightened filtered year by year, while the replacement of the vehicle fleet, and thus should emissions of NO2 also fall about five to ten years.

And according filtered to an unreliable filtered source - an article in a German car magazine - there may also be problems with some nanoparticles from diesel cars. (Interest source critical is the source of nanoparticles nothing to boast about).

Who is responsible for diesel engines used in cities and their poor exhausts? I remember a time when the focus was on leaded petrol and where just 1 doctor specializing in hazardous substances dare to stand up and present relationship between lead in the air and children's poor
