Below is a note posted today (25/07) on the site "Technological Innovation" noting that an international team with participation of Brazilian astrophysicists discovered a new way to study the traces left by "Atmospheric Showers".
An international team of astrophysicists with participation of the Institute of Physics of São Carlos, USP, found a new way to study the traces left by "air showers", particle cascades through the atmosphere continuously.
The experiment was conducted at the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina, which aims to detect and study ultraenergéticos cosmic rays, particles that can achieve energy about 1,000 times higher than those obtained by particle accelerators like the LHC.
Invisible to the naked eye, these showers are caused by so-called cosmic rays, although actually the "cosmic rays" are not rays - they are composed of various types of particles, such as protons, electrons, neutrinos and mesons.
The team, which has 102 researchers from around the world, had been so far working with two tools to measure these ultraenergéticos rays: the technique of water tanks - also known as Cherenkov detectors - and the fluorescence telescopes.
"The Centre's members continually seek to develop new techniques that bring more accurate ne er do well and detailed measures to thereby extend the possibilities of the Centre as a whole," said Professor Luiz Vitor de Souza Filho, ne er do well who participated in the research.
"In the literature, two theories explain two different effects on emission of radio waves through the air shower: the geomagnetic effect and the Askaryan effect, but evidence had never been measured That was probably why the article was highlighted and. was accepted in a major scientific journal of the area, "says Professor of IFSC.
To be widespread for other uses, the radio detectors technique does not require a major technological development to adapt to the specific purposes of the Pierre Auger Observatory, and has a very low cost.
"Although the results have been positive, the radio technique showed some flaws, which does not make it the 'flagship' of a new stage of the observatory. Nevertheless, the results are good enough for us to continue investing, even if In parallel, other techniques are also investigated, "said Luiz Vitor.
