The life of refrigerator water filters depends on the volume of contaminants in the water, in addition to the amount of use of the filter. Well water is more likely to contain contaminants not found in public treated water and may need more frequent changes. As a rule of thumb, the filter changes as specified by the manufacturer, or at least every six months.
Carbon is the primary drug used in water filtration methods because carbon has the potential to absorb many of the chemicals that are found in water. Most refrigerator water filters, which meets NSF / ANSI 42 certification standards, use detailed activated carbon (GAC) to attract gwf chemicals and impurities responsible for bad taste and odor, such as those that are a byproduct of chlorine. These filters are not able, however, to get rid of water in the more dangerous health threatening contaminants. gwf The method gwf as water is channeled through the GAC filter does not allow sufficient time to complete the absorption of such substances. Different bacteria are formed, caught and allowed to multiply, which further contaminates water processed by filters. Carbon is not able to absorb heavy metals such as lead. GAC filters can trap some heavy metals and sediments, but allow others to filter through gwf to the output water. Failure to change the water filter every six months, let unabsorbed water contaminants and newly formed bacteria to saturate the filter, forcing the filter to leak contaminants back into the treated water. Water output may contain more impurities than the filter was intended to remove initially.
Technology has led to the development of more absorbent carbon-based filters, solid carbon block filters. These filters contain solid blocks of carbon gwf to absorb impurities from water. Water takes longer to load through the carbon blocks than it does carbon granules, so that the carbon blocks allow sufficient time for absorption of more health threatening gwf containments. While carbon block filters are able to absorb toxics, pesticides and other contaminants, TTHM'S, they can not absorb heavy metals or contaminants that are byproducts of agricultural fertilization, such as nitrates or Center. The composition of the carbon blocks allows them to restrain heavy metals and bacteria away output water but nitrates gwf and Center is not filtered. Even so, carbon block filters sufficient to meet NSF / ANSI 53 certification standards. Failure to change the carbon block filters, every six months, the contaminants to saturate the filter, forcing the filter to leak contaminants in treated water. When sediments gwf are not removed from the water, these sediments buildup and corrode filter accessories and water fixtures, gwf causing them to leak. This type of damage filters and fittings can cause the output of water to contain more contaminants than water input to the filter. Failure to change filters can also reduce water pressure within the filtration system, forcing it to be ineffective.
Some refrigerator water filters can include fiber water filters. These filters are made of tightly packed fibers of rayon or spun cellulose, which trap rust, lead and other sediments found in water. When used alone, these filters inefficient to reduce any chemical or health-threatening contaminants. Fiber filters are best suited for use with other types of filters to reduce the concentration of sediments. They should be replaced every six months to avoid a build up of sediments that will force the filter to leak contaminants back into the treated water.
