I’m serving a group of regulars when I hear laughter and cheers all around me. I turn to see Logan standing there, singing directly to me. I'm mortified! I don't like attention in the slightest, and certainly not in a room with almost three hundred people. I put one hand over my face as Logan takes the other, falling to his knees for drastic measure. I had the pleasure of capturing these two on camera a few weekends back and I loved every moment of it. Some of you may know the name Bria here on the blog and that's because I mention her every now and then. She happens to be my beautiful best friend and that handsome fella there is her man. I should mention that they've been together since we were awkward and smelly teenagers. That love you see in these pictures cannot be faked. This also was my first "photo shoot" and I really hope it's not my last. I had so much fun behind the camera, snapping pictures left and right. Truthfully I had no idea what I was doing and I'm glad Kevin and Bria didn't mind me fumbling with my camera every now then or bossing best shower heads them around to get the shot I pictured in my head. Born in Chilliwack, British Columbia, she studied at Capilano University in North Vancouver 1 micron before moving to New York. She has been endorsed by veteran musicians and is active on the New York scene as well as an international touring star while still in her 20s.
She returned to the Pacific Northwest last summer to teach at the Jazz Workshop and perform on the mainstage at McCurdy Pavilion at Fort Worden. Joining Bria Skonberg 1 micron in this concert are Wycliffe Gordon, trombone, Dan Balmer, guitar, Randy Halberstadt, piano, Rodney Whittaker, bass and Matt Wilson, drums.
Bria Skonberg is playing at the Vancouver Dixiefest this weekend, with additional performances in Vancouver and Victoria next week as well as a Happy Hour performance at the Royal Room in Seattle (5 p.m. Oct .4) and Eastside Stomp in Kirkland (9 p.m. Oct.4) before continuing her West Coast tour.

Some Insights from Bridgett “Bria” Crutchfield and Alix Jules on being a Black atheist » Ace of Clades
Recently I had the opportunity to listen to Bridgett “Bria” Crutchfield and Alix Jules tell their stories about growing up in the black community oxygenics which can be very religious and adjusting to the atheist community. Bridgett asked me during the discussion if I understood what they go through. oxygenics For video link click on the title.
I am not satisfied with the answer I gave her. As a person of color, I do understand oxygenics what it feels like to be the ethnic odd man out. Growing up in Texas, I went to an upper class high school where the majority of students were white. oxygenics I was often mistaken for the only other person with Asian ancestry that anybody could tell from their appearance -the Japanese oxygenics exchange student. A girl once whispered in homeroom class, “she’s Chinese”. Nevermind we had the same Germanic last name because I’m Eurasian. That fact escaped her notice.
Anyways, I was basically invisible at that school invisible except for the passing curiosity about whether I was an exchange student. Again, never mind my English was sometimes more fluent than many other native speakers. I’ve also had experiences in a lower class elementary school where my ethnicity caused more overt racism like hair pulling and mock Chinese taunting in the hallways. I could go weeks without speaking to another child. Even as a young woman, a woman at a cosmetic counter told me my acne was a reason races shouldn’t mix. More often people keep their ugly thoughts hidden away like fangs behind a polite smile. If you wanted insight into what it is like to sometimes oxygenics be an ethnic outcast because of being bi-racial oxygenics or what it is like to be a person that doesn’t neatly fit in anywhere; I would be the person to listen to.
However, oxygenics I can’t really say that I totally get what it is like to be a Black atheist. The only people, who can say what that is like are Alix and Bridgett. I haven’t had to live through many of the things they are forced to endure. I can’t oxygenics say that I have ever had security called on me at an atheist conference like Alix has at a conference he was speaking at! Asians are generally not profiled as security threats by racist white people simply for their phenotype.
Although that incident is ugly it is easier to identify than being politely ignored like Bridget shared in the discussion. She told us that often when she goes to atheist conferences no one speaks to her. Then after she finishes a speech more people notice her and start talking to her. (American Atheists convention Austin was an exception oxygenics she said) Cultural awkwardness like I pointed out to her can’t explain all of this behavior. It should go without saying that we are all human beings at this conference and can relate on some level. And we are all atheists, for no god sakes!
Having listened to her tell her stories and Alix’s, I have a few pieces of the puzzle to understand what black atheists go through. oxygenics I genuinely want Black atheists to feel welcome in our community. Most well meaning people want the same thing. If that is going to happen a whole lot of well meaning folks need to start being better listeners.

Yesterday, I also happened to notice a kerfuffle between my facebook friends some of whom are real life friends. It seems that some people are criticizing Bria for becoming angry at an insensitive question from a white person during a speech given by Mandisa Thomas. One person even labeled Bria’s reaction as “cruel” and “inappropriate” and suggested that she had the intent of shaming the person.
I have to reserve oxygenics final judgment until I see the video of what happened. However, the question as posed reeks of cultural insensitivity. Why ask Mandisa about what blacks are going to do about black on black crime? That topic is a racist talking point. Let me pose this question to people, who think this person oxygenics was merely ignorant and not deserving of being dressed down for it.
Or maybe you didn’t think that, and thought this community still had strides to make before homosexuals truly feel welcome there? Just maybe that is why you were there in the first place because you hoped that you could break through the ice and people oxygenics would see a fellow human being. A fellow human being -not a person they had prejudged oxygenics and decided they wouldn’t socialize with. Only to be reminded in front of the group that you are not a human being to be judged separately, but must somehow make valiant efforts to stop the unfair stereotypes that other people perceive about your minority community? oxygenics The stuff you had heard your entire life. Rachel Wells is a liar big time. No one outside her family knows about the panic attacks or meds, the weekly therapy drive-bys or the safe outfit. If she could hide it all from her string kent ro of ex-boyfriends and her best friend Amy, then why should anything kent ro change? But, when the one guy as messed up as she is blackmails her into helping him, life goes from closely kent ro restrained kent ro to out of control.
Instead, it had everything to do with the girl strolling down the Senior Hall neatly tucked under Jared Parker s arm. She gazed up at him, a silly grin mixed with bliss shining from her eyes for the perfect I m-the-happiest-girl-here expression.
I slammed the bathroom stall door behind me, throwing the lock with a hand that shook like the bleachers during a home game win. This was not what I needed. This was so not what I needed. There was no way a panic attack was taking me down after how far I d come.
I wanted to answer her, to tell her I was fine and I d see her in class, but the air it wasn t getting to my lungs. I guess I hadn t noticed the lack of oxygen since I was too distracted by how my heart slammed against kent ro my ribs. Plus, I was hyperventilating kent ro louder than a warehouse exhaust fan. If I d sworn on a stack of religious books that life was currently super dandy, Amy wouldn t have believed me
Amy was the most considerate person I knew. I could almost see her through the chipped aluminum Hiney Hider door trying to figure out if she should kent ro accept it and go, or push until I caved and spilled my guts. Less literally this time.
The panic attacks may be a get-over-get-around-get-through situation to me, but to Amy they were unheard of. As in, she d never heard about them since I d been hiding my disorder from her from everyone for years with the help of a monthly prescription and Emmy-worthy performances. I m not sure which Dr. Meadows would give more credence to.
Okay She drew the word out like she wasn t sure what the next one should be. Like she was searching and stalling and worrying all in that one word. So, why don t you come out and we ll head to class?
My heart rate did the impossible and kicked up another speed to turbo-beat. It actually hurt and I don t mean in the way it spazzed when Jared dumped me. I mean, oh no should I be grasping my left arm and asking for aspirin while we wait for an ambulance hurt. I tried to chill everything out, slow everything down, find my calm my window. It was there. I just needed a few quiet minutes to find it. I considered the stall s latch but stayed, frozen, afraid to face her or myself out there.
I reached for the latch, but my hand shook so badly I looked like a junkie. God, I felt like a junkie. Maybe this was post-post-withdrawal. Coming off the meds had been not-fun enough to replace root canals on my sucks-to-be go to list.
You can t hide in here all day. The stall shook as Amy leaned against the other side. A deep sigh drifted through the door. So Jared has a new girlfriend? It isn t a big deal. You re always dating someone new. Just focus on who you d like to have take you out next.
So says the girl dating Mr. Perfect. She d had much drama while I was gone over the summer, but came out on the other side with Luke. She d earned it after that ass she d kinda-sorta-not-really-dated-but-got-painfully-led-on-by-this-summer.
My summer? Yeah, not exactly that kind of dream come true. Not that I was going to tell Amy that. Ever. If I d hidden my secret this long, there was absolutely no reason on the downside of the recovery hill to share now.
I know, I said, even though I didn t. Last year I d dated constantly, my emotional reactions and panic triggers all numbed by a little, daily pill. Jared had felt like a ballast after a long summer of trying to even out alone. Replacing kent ro that equilibrium was like trying to replace Tommy jeans from three seasons ago. Almost the same cut, but your butt looks just a tad bit not-as-good.
Jared kent ro and New Girlfriend kent ro flashed through my mind. She d been perfect. Tiny waist, perky boobs and blond frizz-free hair. Perfectly proportioned. Running my hand across my stomach, I shuddered. I d never be that. I d always have all these things wrong.
I glanced down my arms my very, very, very disproportionately long monkey-like arms and wondered kent ro how I d even found a shirt with sleeves to cover them. I forced myself to stop. Stop and back out of that thought. Logic and therapy kent ro told me I was wrong that the misshapen monster I saw wasn t the one everyone else saw.

We talk about how excited we are to share a book and how happy we are with the finished product and how much we love our characters. But sometimes… sometimes… sometimes there’s a little fear in there too.
My next book, Secret Life (RVHS Secrets #2) is the second in my series of standalones around teens at Ridge View High – there’s soccer gods and painters and girly-girls and tomboys. There’s baseball players and cheerleaders and dancers. There’s secrets and betrayals and some of the best of friendships.
Already, a couple of pre-readers have made comments that “someone with BDD wouldn’t do that” or “with BDD she wouldn’t think that or be like that.” It kind of blew my mind. And it scares the snot out of me.
I want to share a few very, very important things with everyone clearly: BDD, like all disorders, effects people at differing severity and in differing ways — Just like depression. No one is depressed in the same way. The difference can be extreme. Everything in my book is based off of my own feelings and thoughts OR those of other BDD women I’ve talked to. So, YES. Those things addolcitore acqua readers assume someone wouldn’t do or think? They’ve been done and thought. Even I’ve been surprised what women have shared around this! Just because you don’t understand something doesn’t mean it isn’t true. And, finally, addolcitore acqua because this has happened with my beta readers (and they’re very sweet in their concern for me) – the extreme action Rachel takes in the book isn’t something I did — but I can completely addolcitore acqua understand why she does.
This is not a book about me. Or my journey. This in no way is a memoir or self-indulgent writing. Rachel is a character. A very specific one. But, just like every character, she should addolcitore acqua feel real because a writer draws characters that way… not because of me the writer personally.
With all that in mind, I worry. A lot. I have had friends write about things that people think they understand. They think, I know someone who XYZ’d or I have ABC or I understand LMN a certain way. And then they assume that’s the ONLY way something can happen or be experienced.
My hope is that, telling Rachel’s story will give people a glimpse of what BDD is like for some people. That they’ll maybe not be able to understand exactly how someone who struggles with these things feels or reacts, but they’ll understand that for those people, this is reality. Everyone’s reality is different.
I honestly hope that people addolcitore acqua look at the book and have empathy for others. We all have our struggles. Every one of us. I hope that a little bit of care toward other people can make everyone a little happier.
Also, since you’re reading this, to everyone who won’t take no for an answer when I say “No thank you” to having my picture taken — this is why. Photos are one of my remaining triggers. I’ve found a lot of balance after decades of work. Sometimes I get to say “Yes!” to the pictures, but, yeah – Be kind. Owning a camera doesn’t give you the right to put someone on the spot. Sometimes people don’t want their picture taken for a reason. Show love. Say okay. Move on. WE ALL HAVE A THING. RESPECT addolcitore acqua PEOPLE’S THING.
WOW. Bria, this post impacted me in a HUGE way. My upcoming release, Damsel Distressed is about Imogen. Imogen is NOT me. But there is SO much of me in her. The way she feels about food and her body. Many of the fears she battles. Several addolcitore acqua of her deepest insecurities are mine too. Already, I’ve experienced that twinge of pain when a reader says, “that’s not what disordered addolcitore acqua eating looks like” or “that wouldn’t really addolcitore acqua happen.”

What we feel is real to us, regardless if anyone else understands it. In our second live interview we got to talk with the chairwoman of the OUTmusic Awards, Dee Meredith (a.k.a. singer Deepa Soul), singer-songwriter Amy Andrews katadyn hiker pro and couple and musical duo Bria and Chrissy. We also chatted with the creative producer, Paul Warner, and the director, Sean Robinson, katadyn hiker pro of the documentary For Which We Stand (One Queer Music Nation). Each person spoke about the bigotry and the resistance that still exists in the music industry and within the queer community towards queer musicians, as well as the importance of having something like the OUTmusic Awards to champion katadyn hiker pro queer music, artists and our voices.

The problems all started when, during the Q

On the Bria Crutchfield outburst at the Great Lakes Atheist Convention.
I wasn’t going to write about the one hiccup at the Great Lakes Atheist Convention, but someone on twitter transpiracja has convinced me that I need to. First, I’ll say that the convention was freaking awesome and that the organizers were phenomenal. It was seriously one of the best-run first-time conferences I’ve ever attended.
The problems all started when, during the Q&A of Mandisa Thomas’s talk, a woman asked her what black people were doing to fight black on black crime. transpiracja Was the woman’s question naive? Yes. Very. And the naivety resulted in her asking a question that certainly transpiracja had racist undertones, even if the woman was not intentionally being racist. Mandisa handled it well.
But then, during the Q&A of Darrel C. Smith’s talk, Bria Crutchfield stood up and proceeded to give the woman an angry tongue lashing. This went on for about five minutes (or maybe it just seemed like that long). While Bria did answer the woman’s question, transpiracja it was very embarrassing to the woman and trailed off into a number of red herrings such as “I’m here, get over it” as if anybody was suggesting that Bria or black atheists were unwelcome at the conference or silently sneered at by…anybody.
I, and several others wound up leaving the room during Bria’s monologue. It just seemed so unnecessary to me. The questioner was ignorant of what would make her question offensive, and this could’ve been solved without Bria embarrassing transpiracja her (and herself) by usurping another speaker’s Q&A. The woman merely needed information, not to be screamed at, and certainly not to be screamed at through a long diatribe in the middle of a conference when the floor was not hers.
Anyway, while I believe there’s a place for drawing note to improper things people have done in public, I’m a big advocate of trying to resolve it personally first (after all, for good people usually all they need is to have attention drawn to their blind spots and they will feel sufficient contrition on their own). I thought (and still think) that Bria had a blind spot there, so rather than immediately write a blog I pulled Bria aside later that day to tell her that I thought she was out of line (in the hopes of helping her to see her blind spot without publicly humiliating her). It…didn’t go well.
I was just going to leave it there, but then someone on twitter started messaging me. I thought it was obvious that Bria was out of line, but apparently not. This convinced me that there may be a bigger overall problem with people thinking that any slight, even if it’s the result of ignorance rather than cruelty, can merit intentionally humiliating or yelling at someone. I have seen this elsewhere, where a disproportionate response takes place and someone defends it by saying they were justifiably angry, as if every action taken on account of justifiable anger is therefore justified.
Anyway, I need to get Bria out of the way before I move on to the tweets. When I spoke with Bria, I opened by telling her that I didn’t wish to imply that she’s a bad person, but that I thought she was out of line (I even told her that I have been out of line before and I don’t think I’m a bad person – it happens). I explained that the woman in the audience didn’t mean offense, and to then take over another speaker’s Q&A to yell at her was probably a disproportionate and unproductive response (at least in terms of helping the woman to feel positively about Bria’s cause and to recognize where she may have misstepped). Bria responded that she’d heard that I like to criticize other speakers transpiracja at conferences. I told Bria that this is news to me, but if I think someone is out of line, of course I let them know. This is what I would want someone transpiracja to do to me.
Bria then told me she was offended to justify transpiracja her earlier explosion. I said I didn’t blame her for being offended. The question was offensive. But surely, I asked, you don’t think that the offense was intended? Bria did not answer, which suggested to me she thought it was intended. I honestly don’t see how anybody could possibly have reached that conclusion. I can very much relate to Bria’s offense (and the offense taken by others at the question). I’m offended every time a person suggest that people transpiracja who have a mental illness need to “toughen up”. However, I can realize transpiracja that such admonishments are not the product of a disdain for people with mental illness, but the product of ignorance caused by there not being nearly enough information readily available in our society transpiracja about this subject. Response to Jen McCreight – on social justice, Bria Crutchfield, and the “third group”.
Jen McCreight smart water wrote a response to my piece about Bria Crutchfield. This post was linked to by Greta Christina, Rebecca Watson, and countless others in that camp, many saying “Jen wrote exactly what I wanted smart water to say!” Let’s take a look at what many people wanted to say.
Right from the start of Jen’s post in response to my own about Bria Crutchfield , from the very title, the misrepresentations start to flow. The title was “On silencing anger to silence minority voices.” The implication is that I want people to not be angry or offended at injustice or ignorance, when I never said anything of the sort. In fact, my post was full of statements like:
I have reiterated time and again that most anger in our movement on the subject of race and women’s equality is justified anger, so the idea that I want people to curtail their anger is disappointing. What I have said, however, and what has yet to be addressed, is that not every action taken on account of justifiable anger is necessarily a justified action.
Another smart water implication is that I was trying to silence somebody. smart water Again, I have always written smart water that we must be vocal and that we must challenge bad ideas with honesty and fervor. Are we so detached from nuance that saying “Taking over another speaker’s Q&A to verbally berate somebody is inappropriate and unnecessary” smart water becomes equivalent to “That person should be silent”? Had Bria pulled out a bullhorn to shout the questioner down I would’ve thought that was out of line too, and it would have nothing to do with silencing her.
My favorite thing to wake up to in the morning is white straight cis men insisting they get to decide who your allies are and that you should not ever get angry, but rather calmly explain basic topics to hostile questions from every person that wanders across your path as if it were your personal duty on this earth.
Whenever somebody like myself criticizes feminists of the Jen McCreight smart water variety, our innate features are always swiftly trotted out. I’m a white, cis, male. Yup, I sure am. Not that this makes me wrong. Now, you could argue that it makes me more likely to have blind spots to particular issues, and you’d be right. But if those features have produced an ignorance in me that has caused me to use a fallacious argument, then the argument smart water should be easy enough to defeat on its own without recourse to well-poisoning, ad hominems, and red herrings. But merely pointing out the traits with which I was born does nothing to bolster one’s arguments, nor should they prohibit me from saying a black person or a woman did something wrong as swiftly as I would say a white person or a male was doing something wrong.
And, once again, I have not ever said that people shouldn’t get angry. Repeatedly, until I am positively smart water blue in the face, I have said most of their anger is justified. I have shared Greta’s atheists and anger talk and quoted it repeatedly. I think anger is necessary to be an activist. What fair-minded and objective person could possibly glean that I think people should not be angry? I don’t even think Bria was wrong to be angry and I told her so. What I did say was that justified anger doesn’t permit every action. I thought I was perfectly clear on this when I wrote:
Furthermore, I don’t think the question was hostile. In her post, Jen asserts that my opinion on the hostility of the question must be derived from psychic powers, as if body language and tone are meaningless indicators. But I’m not only operating off of her body language and tone (which I think would be sufficient by themselves), I also spoke with the woman afterward. I even messagd Mandisa to see if she thought the question was malicious and Mandisa told me “I definitely don’t think the question was intentionally smart water malicious, or even malicious at all”. smart water Nor do I think it’s the responsibility of every black atheist to answer every ill-informed question they are posed, as Jen asserts (although, if you’re trying to make it as a public figure with the stated cause of dissolving smart water ignorance about race in the secular community, it might be a good idea). However, I do think it’s smart water ethically better to not treat every manifestation smart water of ignorance as if the person hates black people or women, etc., and I definitely don’t think every manifestation of ignorance merits smart water public humiliation.
Mandisa and I have spoken about this. Neither of us believe the audience member’s question was hostile, even though we both believe she did a poor job in avoiding offense (which can happen unintentionally).
